On Thursday 11th February, Southam swim squads took to the pool in the level 2 school games competition. It was a tight competition seeing lots of schools from around the central Warwickshire area competing.
The year 7 girls squad swam extremely well seeing them finishing in 1st place overall with 38 points, beating Myton, Campion, Aylesford, Kings High and Kingsley. There were some outstanding wins from Erin (Front crawl), Lucy (Front crawl), Medley relay (all swimmers) and Lana and Lucy in the 2 length relay helping to contribute to the big total.
Following in the girls footsteps the year 7 boys had an equally impressive day finishing in 1st place in the boys team event with 41 points. There were some fantastic wins from Quinn and Lennon in the 2 length relay, James, Dan and Lennon in their individual swims (breaststroke, backstroke and front crawl) and superb wins in both the freestyle relay and the medley relay.
A tougher competition faced the year 8 and 9 girls with some impressive swimmers from Kings High saw them finish in 3rd and 2nd place respectively. The girls battled hard in each of their races with some outstanding wins from Aoife (backstroke) and Ella (breaststroke) and solid seconds in many events.
The year 8 boys were harshly ruled into second position on the day after seeing them confidently win the majority of the events in the pool. However in their penultimate race for the day (medley relay) they were ruled disqualified due to an incorrect touch at the wall after finishing clear of Myton. Due to this disqualification they finished on 35 points 2 points behind the overall winners Myton. The boys performed extremely well in the pool with wins from Brandon (2 length relay, freestyle and freestyle relay), Oscar (2 length relay, backstroke and freestyle relay), Lewis (front crawl and freestyle relay) and Jacob (freestyle relay).
The year 9 boys performed well in the pool but due to them being unable to field a full team of their own age group they were unable to qualify. However due to Tom (Year 7) stepping up to the mark and filling in they were able to compete at the event. They saw some strong performances with majority of the boys finishing in 2nd place with one win coming from Will in the front crawl event.
Congratulations to all swimmers who competed to such a high level but who also represented the school exceedingly well with their behaviour.
A huge well done to the year 7 Boys and Girls teams who have qualified to the next round on 14th March where they will represent Central Warwickshire.
