Eleven Southam College students battled the weather at Warwickshire Schools Athletics Championships.
Eleven students from across a variety of age groups and events competed at Edmondscote Athletics Track in the Warwickshire Schools Athletics Championships. The day saw some great performances considering the poor weather conditions throughout.
Rhys James started the day off in the pole vault in the 9am downpour of rain. However despite the awful conditions he managed to equal his PB of 2.10m finishing in 2nd place. Rhys finished his day with another PB in the 800m this time knocking nearly 4 seconds off, coming home in 2.10min in 1st place.
Alex Ibbs saw similar success in the Inter boys 800m, finishing in a very strong 1st place with 2.08min, fractionally outside his PB.
Larissa Hurt continued the success in the middle distance events taking on a strong field in the junior girls 1500m and finishing in a very promising 4th place in a time of 5.26min. Georgie Hurt and Aiofe Williams competed in a very fast 800m finishing in a strong 6th and 10th place. These performances were very promising considering the girls were mainly competing against year 9 students.
Southam had similar successes in the sprints with Morgan Reeves finishing 2nd in the inter boys 400m in 53.3secs. Sophie Smales finishing in 6th in the junior girls 200m in 28.5secs, Megan Hickey finishing 3rd in 28.4secs, in the inter girls 200m. Max Ward completed the successes with a 12.5sec 100m in the inter boys 100m coming home in 7th place.
Megan Hickey had a busy afternoon also finishing 2nd in the high jump equalling her PB of 1.45m. Liam Knight Robinson also had a afternoon in a tough discus competition finishing in 5th with a throw of 24.15m.
Not only did we have fantastic performances but we also had excellent representation from Chris Simmons one of our sports leaders who helped with track judging for the day. Chris did a fantastic job assisting the officials and they were very complementary of his skills.
The athletes will find out early this week if they gain selection for the Warwickshire team at the Mason Cup next weekend at the Alexander Stadium.
